Time to Think and Pray

Questions

  • What kind of person was Nabal?

  • What kind of person was Abigail?

  • When David sent his men to visit Nabal, what happened?

  • How did this make David feel?

  • What did Abigail do to stop David fighting with Nabal?

Nabal had a bad temper and was known for being rude and cruel to people. But his wife, Abigail, was kind and friendly. When David sent his men to visit Nabal to ask for some supplies like food and water, Nabal treated them very badly. He was rude to them and told them to go away! David was very angry when his men came back and told him what had happened. He wanted to fight Nabal. David and his men took their swords and headed back to Nabal’s farm to fight him. But before they could get there, Abigail met them with lots of supplies. She had heard how Nabal had treated David’s men and felt really bad about it. She gave David the supplies and begged him not to hurt Nabal. She calmed David down and sorted out the whole problem! Because of her kindness, no one was hurt and a bad situation was made better.

It’s so important to be kind to others. By being kind, we can make someone feel better, stop someone from doing something they will regret and sort out bad problems just like Abigail did! By being kind, we show God’s love to others. It’s very important to think about what we say and do before we do it so that we don’t hurt someone’s feelings or cause problems. God wants us to try to always be kind.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for the true story of Abigail, which shows us how important it is to be kind. Please help us to think before we say and do things and to be kind to other people, even when they aren't nice to us. Please help us to show your love to others by being kind. Amen.
