Jesus' Ascension

Jesus died on the cross to take the punishment for the wrongs things we have done, and then he broke the power of death by coming alive again! He did this to save us so that we can be forgiven for our sin and live with God forever in heaven! How wonderful! Jesus appeared to his disciples and stayed with them for a while explaining everything to them. After he had done this it was time for Jesus to go back to His Father in heaven. Let’s watch the video to see what happened:

Time to Think and Pray

Questions

  • How many days did Jesus spend with his disciples before he went into Heaven?

  • Who did Jesus promise to send to the disciples after he was gone?

  • What did Jesus command his disciples to do after he was gone?

  • What did the Holy Spirit look and sound like?

Jesus spent the next 40 days with his disciples teaching them and other people about God, until one day it was time for him to go back and be with His Father. He led his disciples to a place called Bethany and, right before their eyes, Jesus was taken up into Heaven to be with his Father. Before he went, Jesus promised his disciples that he would send the Holy Spirit to be with them. The Holy Spirit would come to them and give them all that they need to teach and speak to others about Jesus. He commanded them to go out into the world and teach people about him!

A little while after Jesus went back into heaven, the disciples were praying together in a room when God sent his Holy Spirit to them. Suddenly they heard the sound of wind and saw flames of fire above their heads! The Holy Spirit helped them to be able to speak about Jesus to lots of people who spoke different languages - and the people understood them!

Jesus wants us to tell people about him too! If we pray, he will send his Holy Spirit to be with us. The Holy Spirit can help us to speak to our friends and families about Jesus! Before Jesus went into Heaven, he told his disciples that one day he will come back in the very same way that he went. God will create a new Heaven and a new Earth! Only God knows the time and day when this will happen and if we love Jesus and follow him in this life, one day we will go to be with him in heaven forever!

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you that if we ask you, you will send your Holy Spirit to be with us. Please help us to be brave and speak to our friends and families about you. Thank you that if we love and follow you, one day we will go to heaven to be with you forever! Amen.
