Paul and Silas in Prison

In the last session we heard how Paul told Lydia the good news about Jesus and her whole family believed. Paul and his friends carried on telling people everywhere that Jesus had died for them but some people didn’t like them doing this. In today’s story Paul and his friend Silas get into trouble. Let’s watch the video and see what happened:

Time to Think and Pray

Questions

  • Why were Paul and Silas arrested?
  • How would you feel if you were beaten and put in prison for telling someone about Jesus?

  • Paul and Silas didn’t react like you’d expect. What did they do?

  • What amazing thing did God do to free them from their chains?

  • What was the jailer’s reaction when he saw what happened?

  • What great thing happened to the jailer and his family because of this?

  • Have you ever been in a bad situation and felt sad or scared?

  • What did you do? Did you pray or sing?

When they were thrown into jail, Paul and Silas weren’t afraid! They prayed to God about what was happening and asked for His help. And then they sang songs to thank Him for loving them and taking care of them. The Bible tells us (in Romans 8 v 28) that if we believe in Jesus He will bring good out of everything that happens to us. Paul and Silas believed this. They trusted that God would keep them safe – and He did – and the jailer’s whole family came to believe in Jesus too!

When you feel worried or upset remember that you can pray to Jesus too. Just talk to Him like you would talk to your Mum or Dad. He loves you and wants to help you. And thank him for taking care of you and for all the good things He has done for You and will do for you. You could sing a song too! If you believe in Jesus you can trust that He will always be working for your good in everything that happens.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, Thank you that You love me very much. When I’m worried and upset please help me to remember to pray to You. Thank you that I can trust you to take care of me and to bring good out of everything that happens to me. Amen.

This Week's Crafts: Shakers and Thank You Paper Chains

Shakers

You will need: Rice or dried beans; a tin can (open at one end); a balloon (or paper) to cover the open end;  rubber bands; coloured tape; scissors; a glue stick and paper to decorate your can.

Put some rice or dried beans in the tin can. Cut off the end of a balloon and stretch it right over the opening of the tin can so it covers it completely. Double wrap a rubber band over the balloon edges so it stays on.

If you don’t have a tin can you could make a Cardboard Roll Shaker instead. Take a look at the ideas below and create your own musical instruments!

Thank You Paper-Chains

You will need: Strips of coloured paper; pens and either a glue stick, sellotape or a stapler.

See how many things you can think of to thank God for and write one on each chain. Then stick them together to see how long a chain you can make. You may want to add to it each day as you think about your favourite things that happened and what made you happy.
