Queen Esther

In this session on Old Testament Heroes of the Bible, we are going to hear about a girl named Esther. Esther lived with her cousin, Mordecai, in the land of Persia, with many of God’s people. One day, the King of Persia decided to look for a wife and he chose Esther! Let’s watch the video to see what happened:

Time to Think and Pray

Questions

  • What did the king do to find a new wife?

  • What awful plan did Haman think up?

  • How do you think Esther felt when she went to see the King?

  • Have you ever had to do something really brave? How did you feel?

  • Did the king help Esther and God’s people?

The King of Persia held a beauty contest to find himself a wife! And he chose Esther as she was very beautiful. So Esther became the king’s wife and the queen of Persia. The king's right-hand man, Haman, hated God’s people, the Jews. He wanted to get rid of all of them! He didn't know that Queen Esther was also a Jew! He put a terrible plan together and managed to persuade the king to approve it.

Esther and her cousin, Mordecai, were horrified when they heard about Haman’s plan! Esther had to do something to stop it from happening! Thankfully, she was now the king’s wife, so she took the opportunity to go and talk to the king. But this was still very risky because anyone who went to see the King without being invited could be put into prison or even killed immediately! It must have been very scary for Esther but God was with her. He gave her strength and helped her to be brave. It took a few tries for Esther to finally talk to the king about Haman's awful plan, but when she did, the king realised that what he’d approved was very wrong! He wouldn’t just be killing God’s people, but killing Queen Esther and her family too! He stopped Haman’s plan and had Haman taken away so he couldn’t do anything awful again.

God was at work in Esther's life, enabling her to become the king’s wife so that she could help save thousands of people!  God gave Esther strength, bravery and courage to help them even though she was very scared. And God has good plans for us too! He has great things for us to do, and He will help us to be strong and brave, just like Esther!

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you that you have good plans for me. Please help me to be strong and brave so that I can do great things to help others, even when it's hard. Thank you that I don't need to be afraid because you love me and are always with me. Amen.
