The Fiery Furnace

In this session on Old Testament Heroes of the Bible we are going to learn about three men, named Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. These men lived in Babylon, which was ruled by the evil King Nebuchadnezzar! The King had a giant gold statue made and told everyone in Babylon to bow down and worship it. But Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego wouldn’t do it! They only worshipped God! Let’s watch the video and see what happened:

Time to Think and Pray

Questions

  • What was the punishment that King Nebuchadnezzar said would happen to anyone who didn’t obey him?

  • Why did Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego refuse to bow down to the gold statue?

  • How did King Nebuchadnezzar feel about this?

  • How many times hotter did the King make the furnace?

  • Why was the King shocked when he looked into the furnace after throwing the men inside?

  • Who had protected Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego from being burned?

  • What new rules did the King create after seeing God’s amazing power?

Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were told to bow down to the King’s giant gold statue but they refused! They stayed standing and told the King that they only bowed down to the one true God. This made King Nebuchadnezzar angry! He threatened to throw them in the fiery furnace and had it made 7 times hotter than usual! The furnace was so hot that the soldiers that threw the men inside died just by getting close to it! But Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego trusted God and knew that he would protect them and keep them safe. They believed in God so strongly that they were willing to risk dying for it!

But when the men were in the furnace, the King and his soldiers looked inside and saw not just 3 people in the fire, but 4! He was very confused! An angel of God had come to rescue Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego! They came out of the fire completely unharmed, not even one hair on their head was burned! The King was absolutely amazed! He changed the rules to say that from then on, everyone in Babylon had to bow down and worship the God who had saved Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego – the one true God!

Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego loved and trusted God so much that they were willing to die for him. And God kept them safe! God rescued them from the fire and because of their amazing faith, a lot more people came to believe in him! God keeps us safe too, we just need to trust and follow him. If we continue to follow and obey God, our faith can become strong just like the faith of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego!

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you that you are so powerful, you saved those men from being burned by the fiery furnace! Thank you that you take care of us and keep us safe. Please help us to trust and follow you so our faith in you can grow stronger and stronger each day. Amen.

Fiery Furnace

You will need: White card; colouring pens or pencils; scissors; glue stick; and a copy of the printable template.

Print out the template from craftingthewordofgod and colour in the main picture, flames and semicircle. Cut out each part of the template. Glue the flames onto the semicircle and then cut the circle in half, down the middle. Fold in the sides of the semicircle a little bit, to create ridges to stick down. Stick these ridges down over the top of the semicircle on the main picture, making sure both halves line up. Now you can open it up and see Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego safe inside the furnace with the angel!
