The Parable of the Lost Son

In this session we are going to hear another parable that Jesus told which teaches us more about God's love. This Bible story is about a son who decides to ask his father for money so he can leave home. Let’s watch the video and see what happens:

Time to Think and Pray

Questions

  • Have you ever been lost from your parents?

  • How would you feel if you wandered off and got lost?

  • What did the father do when his son came back home?

The son should have been at home helping his father with all the work he had to do, but he wanted to leave home and please himself. So he took the money that his father gave him, packed his bags and left. He wasted all his money on wild parties and soon he didn’t even have any money left to buy food. He got a job feeding pigs and was so hungry that he wanted to eat the pig food! He eventually decided to go home and say sorry,  but was worried that his father wouldn’t want him back. But his father was so happy to see him! He forgave his son, gave him brand new clothes and threw a party to celebrate his return! The son realised that he had made a terrible mistake leaving his father and felt happy and safe now that he was home.

God is like the father in this story. This is how he feels when we come back to him! If we stop following God and try to live our lives without him the Bible says we are lost. This makes God sad as he loves us so much. But whenever one of us comes back to God, he throws a party in heaven to celebrate because it makes him so happy! God loves us so much and wants us to be part of his family. When we are part of God’s family, we are safe because he is always with us and we will be able to live forever in heaven with him..

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you that you love us so much that when we decide to follow you, you throw a party in heaven and celebrate just like the father did in our Bible story! Please help us to not get lost but to always stay close to you. Amen.
